The Government introduced IR35 rules to tackle a widespread tax loophole where companies would lay off employees and then rehire them as contractors in the same roles. By doing so, they avoided paying National Insurance contributions and employee taxes, significantly reducing their costs. This practice not only deprived the government of tax revenue but also had a negative impact on the workers’ rights, as they lost access to benefits such as sick pay, holiday pay, and pension contributions. As a result, the government implemented IR35 to ensure fairness in taxation and employment.
IR35, officially known as the “Intermediaries legislation,” is a set of regulations aimed at preventing companies from exploiting this loophole. The rules are designed to assess whether a contractor is genuinely self-employed or, in practice, working as an employee. If a contractor’s working conditions closely resemble those of an employee – for instance, if their contract dictates when, where, and how they work, and they rely on one client as their sole source of income – then HMRC may classify them as falling under IR35. This reclassification means that the contractor would be treated as an employee for tax purposes, requiring the company to pay National Insurance and income tax contributions.
Navigating the complexities of IR35 can be challenging for both companies and contractors. It requires careful consideration of the nature of the working relationship and whether it fits within the IR35 framework. Businesses need to ensure compliance to avoid penalties, while contractors need clarity on their tax status to manage their finances effectively. ZATRS offers expert accounting services to assist with all aspects of IR35 compliance, helping businesses and contractors alike understand their obligations and avoid potential legal or financial issues.
ZATRS ACCOUNTING offers three key services: tax return filing, one-time tax advice consultations, and access to a dedicated pay-as-you-go tax accountant. Here’s a comparison of each and what they provide.

Client Success Stories
One of our contractor clients, an IT consultant, was uncertain about their IR35 status and concerned about the potential tax implications. After engaging with ZATRS Accounting, we conducted a full review of their contracts and provided actionable advice that clarified their IR35 position. By making a few strategic adjustments, the client was able to continue working outside IR35, thereby preserving their financial benefits and avoiding costly surprises. Our personalised approach not only provided peace of mind but also empowered the client to move forward with confidence in their business operations.
